Vehicle Legality & Road Use Guide – Calgary & Alberta

Ride Responsibly. Know the Rules Before You Ride.

At WOW Electric Rides, we want every customer to make an informed and responsible purchase. Laws governing e-bikes, e-scooters, mopeds, dirt bikes, bicycles, and other motorized vehicles can vary based on vehicle type, motor power, speed, equipment, rider age, road classification, pathways, trails, parks, and municipal regulations.

Because laws and bylaws may change at any time, customers are responsible for verifying the most current regulations before purchasing or operating any vehicle.

🚲 E-Bikes / Power Bicycles

In Alberta, certain electric bicycles may qualify as power bicycles if they meet provincial requirements regarding motor power, maximum speed, pedals, safety equipment, and rider eligibility.

When a vehicle meets the legal definition of a power bicycle, it may not require:

  • Driver's licence

  • Vehicle registration

  • Insurance

However, if an e-bike exceeds the permitted limits or does not meet the legal definition of a power bicycle, different rules may apply.

Customers should always verify the current provincial regulations before riding.

🛴 E-Scooters

Rules for e-scooters can differ depending on whether the scooter is privately owned or part of an approved rental program.

Within Calgary, shared e-scooters operate under specific municipal regulations and approved operating zones.

Before operating any e-scooter, riders should confirm whether it may legally be used on:

  • Bike lanes

  • Pathways

  • Sidewalks

  • Public roads

  • Parks

  • Trails

  • Private property

Local bylaws and enforcement policies may vary.

🏍️ Mopeds & Moped-Style E-Bikes

Some moped-style vehicles may require:

  • Driver's licence

  • Vehicle registration

  • Insurance

  • Approved helmet

  • Proper lighting and safety equipment

A vehicle's appearance alone does not determine whether it is street legal.

Legal classification may depend on factors including:

  • Motor power

  • Maximum speed

  • Presence of pedals

  • Vehicle weight

  • Seat height

  • Required safety equipment

  • Provincial regulations

Customers should verify the applicable requirements before operating a moped or moped-style vehicle on public roads.

🏕️ Dirt Bikes & Off-Road Vehicles

Dirt bikes and off-road vehicles are generally intended for off-road use and may not be permitted on:

  • Public roads

  • City streets

  • Sidewalks

  • Bike lanes

  • Pathways

  • Urban parks

For riding on public land or designated off-highway areas, riders may still be required to have:

  • Registration

  • Insurance

  • Visible licence plate

  • Approved helmet

  • Required safety equipment

Rules may vary depending on the riding area and land designation.

🚴 Standard Bicycles

Standard bicycles are generally permitted where bicycles are allowed.

However, cyclists remain responsible for complying with:

  • Municipal bylaws

  • Pathway speed limits

  • Lighting requirements

  • Traffic laws

  • Helmet requirements where applicable

  • Safe riding practices

Always follow local regulations and posted signs.

⚠️ Customer Responsibility

Before purchasing or operating any vehicle, customers are solely responsible for determining:

  • Whether the vehicle is legal for public-road use

  • Whether it can be operated on sidewalks, pathways, bike lanes, parks, trails, or public streets

  • Whether a driver's licence is required

  • Whether registration or insurance is required

  • Whether a licence plate is required

  • Whether helmets or additional safety equipment are required

  • Whether local municipal bylaws permit use in their area

WOW Electric Rides does not guarantee that any vehicle is legal for use on public roads, sidewalks, pathways, bike lanes, parks, or trails in every jurisdiction.

Vehicle classifications, regulations, bylaws, and enforcement practices may change at any time and may vary between municipalities.

Customers should verify all applicable laws with the appropriate authorities before riding.
